Airshow

Like the static, the air show also covered a variety of civil and military aircraft. Russian air power was demonstrated with several helicopters, Su-35s and MiG-29s. Civil demonstrations were flown by Airbus with the A380, Sukhoi with the SSJ and a new turboprop powered bizprop called Rysachyok. The French demonstrated the Rafale C and the US the F-15E.

T-50 public debut

Highlight of this year’s show was the public debut of the Russian ‘stealth fighter’ called the PAK FA or Sukhoi T-50. The T-50 is the Russian answer to the F-22 and is what we call a fifth generation fighter, intended to be the successor to the MiG-29 and Su-27.

The T-50 made its first flight on 29 January 2010 and is still covered in secrecy, as can been seen when it was transported over the runway to the far and of the field. The aircraft only made one flyby, turned a landed direct afterwards. During the third public day, the aircraft had a flameout on take-off en rejected. (Check the video here)

Su-35

The Sukhoi 35, NATO callsign Flanker-E , is the most advanced single seat fighter, currently in the Russian Air Force. The Su-35 is a further developed version of the Su-27 and has new avionics, longer range, and a more powerful engine. The aircraft is famous for it’s Pugachev's Cobra manoeuvre (See how this manoeuvre works) which was performed during the show.

The Su-35 is also offered to foreign countries, with interests in Brazil and Venezuela. South Korea was considering the Su-35 but choose the F-15K.

In our next and last part, we will look into the aerobatic teams performing during the show. Teams like the Russian Knights and Swifts.
