Royal Netherlands Air Force Days 2010

Airshow

The airshow included a variation of helicopters, fighters and demo teams. No surprises this year, but there were some firsts for a Dutch airshow. Firsts like the Finnish NH90, the flying demo of a C-17 and the first appearance of the Spanish helicopter team La Patrulla ASPA, flying the EC-120 Colibri’s.

Other impressive demos were flown by the Hungarian and Czech JAS39 Grippen. The RAF showed the capabilities of the Typhoon.

Airpower Demo

For some years now, the airpower demo is a tradition on the Air Force Days. The airpower demo held halfway the day simulates the capture of a so called high value target (a terrorist) with the full air force arsenal. First the hostile base is attacked by F-16s and secured by AH-64s. After that the cavalry flies in using Cougars and Chinooks.

Absent this year during the demo was the C-130. Except the latest addition to the RNLAF, which could be seen on the static, the other Herculeses’ are still used in Afghanistan.

C-17 Demo

A first for the Air Force Days was the aerial demonstration by the impressive Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, performed by an aircrew from the 452nd Air Mobility Wing (AMW), based at historic March Field, in Southern California. The 452nd AMW is home to the US Air Force Reserve Command's only C-17 demo team.

Read on in our next part including the second part of the airshow with the first appearance of the Spanish helicopter team La Patrulla ASPA.
