Every year Leeuwarden AB in the Northern part of the Netherlands is home to the combined NATO exercise, Frisian Flag. This year two USAF F-15 ANG units joint amongst Dutch, German, French, Spanish and Polish units. In two week’s time, the aircraft flew two sorties a day exercising several scenario’s. Highlight of this year was the participation of two Polish MiG-29s.
The exercise took place from 9 till 20 April. Thousands of aircraft enthusiasts gathered during this time to see the daily two wave take-offs and landings. Especially in the second week the weather conditions were excellent.
Scenario’s flown included air superiority, attack of simulated SAM sites, recovery/support of a downed air crew. Air superiority and dogfighting was realistic this year, as the foo forces flew with MiG-29s. Also some participants exercised bombing runs on the nearby Vliehorst shooting range.
Tanker support was delivered from Eindhoven AB, although the French and US tankers left early to support an attack of Syria. The Dutch KDC-10 was broken so most support was delivered by the Germans.
