NATO Tiger Meet 2004

By Frits Jongerman | September 2004
Celebrating the 40th Tiger Meet.

This year the Nato Tiger Meet celebrates her 40th Tiger Meet. Host is Recce Wing 51 "Immelmann" at Schleswig-Jagel Air Base in the northern part of Germany (near the German/Danish border). This is the 51st Recce Wing's first ever Tiger Meet, and the first NTM in 20 years to be held in northern Germany. NTM 2004 will focus on operational flying, the foundation upon which these meets are based. Therefore, AG51 has planned an integrated tactical flying program which will provide the chance to evaluate tactics and procedures as well as to discuss concepts and new ideas. These CAMAO missions were flown on Tuesday August 31 till Friday September 3rd.

Our first visit to the Tiger Meet was on Wednesday September 1st. The weather wasn´t great, some light rain and lot of clouds. But, what makes it all right, were some nice painted aircraft like two French Mirage 2000's, two Turkish F-16 from 192 Filo with tiger markings (including their wing tanks), Belgian F-16AM, Swiss FA-18C Hornet (Flst. 11, official new member since this Tiger Meet), Czech Mil Mi-24W, JBG-32 Tornado ECR and of course AG 51 with their special painted Tornado IDS. The participants flew two missions on Wednesday; one in the morning and one during the afternoon. The afternoon mission started with the departure of the KC-135E of the New Jersey ANG.

We weren´t the only one photographing as can be seen in this photograph. Notice the backseater of the Belgian F-16BM FB-22 during landing. This aircraft arrived in the morning with F-16AM FA-124 and left around five o'clock after one mission.

Although the didn't take part in the exercise, the Royal Netherlands Air Force was present on Friday with the beautifully painted J-366 (F-16AM). Rnlaf 313 squadron was on exercise in Turkey (Nato Air Meet 2004), but after a long night in maintenance they were able to send two aircraft to Schleswig. Still, some units were not present at all, Esq. 301 and 494 FS didn't show up as planned. On Friday a Spanish KC-130H arrived as a support for the Spanish F1's.
